Weekly Log: January 26 to February 1 (+January Recap)

Heavy training week, attempting to run 100 miles for the first time. Not going to write weekly logs often as I've clearly missed the last like 5 months or so. Free time has decreased significantly and I'll focus on trying to get up race recaps for the more important ones. I'll write up this weekly log and finish up with a recap of January.

Monday: 10 Miles- Charlestown, RI

After the biggest snowstorm in recent years (about 1 foot in Westerly), I got the day off work which was a nice start to the week. Parked at Breachway Grill and ran the usual side roads over to Green Hill. Everything but the main roads was snow covered and slippery/slow.

Tuesday: 14 Miles

AM 9 Miles- Westerly, RI

This was a frigid, tough week for weather. 12 degrees on this one. Been running the same loop most Mondays or Tuesdays through Avondale out to the Watch Hill Lighthouse and back through Ocean View highway. The roads were almost completely snow covered but because it was so cold they were fairly grippy. Stomach issues, 3(!) port-a-potty stops. Started a bit later than usual so the sun came up at mile 5 instead of 7, great view at the lighthouse.

PM 5 Miles- Richmond, RI

For the 5 mile doubles, I've been parking at the Wyoming Dam and doing a simple loop going up Skunk Hill and back down Fairview. It's mostly quiet and good other than that first and last stretch on Arcadia road with not much of a shoulder. Snow was kinda slippery that afternoon. In past workdays (2+ years ago with the school and unemployment break), I had a max of 12 miles a day with 8 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. I felt like I could step it up a bit to 14 on easy days adding a mile to each. These doubles at 20 degrees instead of 10 feel much more comfortable. I also notice it's far easier to run faster on the doubles as my legs are less sluggish.

Wednesday: 16 Miles

AM 11 Miles- Westerly, RI

Pretty much everything snow covered again and while it's grippy enough for easy running, not so great for working out. I figured I'd just do some moderate pace with the conditions and aimed for 6 minute reps at roughly 6 minute pace. Did one of those and felt I was slipping on the snow enough that it wasn't worth it. Got out to Shore which was fully cleared and ran hard for the length of it - about 2.1 miles at 5:30. So less volume than usual but still got something in.

PM 5 Miles- Richmond, RI

Same as the previous day but roads much clearer and faster, ran 20 seconds faster per mile.

Thursday: 14 Miles

AM 9 Miles- Westerly, RI

Loop on Shore over to the weekapaug and back on the hillier side roads. Roads were decent.

PM 5 Miles- Richmond, RI

Same loop again. 2 notable things - 1) on fairview, a truck driver came at me and didn't move over at all or slow down at all so I had to completely stop and step into the snowbank to get out of the road. Another driver behind me had completely stopped and asked if I was okay when she drove by. 2) Right calf was pretty tight.

Friday: 12 Miles

AM 9 Miles- Westerly, RI

Feels like -4 apparently. Actually adjusting/acclimating to the cold pretty well. Towards the downtown area today.

PM 4 Miles- Hopkinton, RI

KG Ranch/Arcadia road loop, a little quieter than the other and got out of work a little early so had the treat of running in the daylight.

Saturday: 22 Miles- Stonington, RI

Opted for Mystic instead of Burlingame since I'd have to run the quarter mile stretch of Vin Gormley in a foot snow to finish. It's nice to get a break from those brutal hills too, and Mystic still has plenty of challenging rollers.

This was actually a better day weather wise as I waited until noon and it was about 20 degrees instead of last weekends 10. That would be really cold most of the time but after this frigid week it felt good. 6 mile warm-up, then 2x5 mile on mile rest, 5 mile cooldown. Good warm-up, first rep felt a bit challenging especially with breathing and legs getting pretty towards the end but really good with a 5:33 pace on rollers (5:23 GAP). One of the best reps I've run in a marathon workout. Started the second one and even with the downhill start it was clear it wasn't going to be sustainable - I had really used a lot in that first rep. At 1.5 miles it felt like I had to poop so I did a little bit then jogged for a bit, ran another mile hard but it felt really hard again so I called it a day. I never like cutting back on the workout but I also don't like going to the well and even if I had just jumped back into it after the bathroom break I'd probably be going very hard to finish that rep. The good news is 5:20 pace for the 1.5 rep and 5:10 for the mile, really good stuff for me. I'll take it overall but could have paced this one better for sure.

I felt really bad for a bit coming back then once I took a break and eased back into I felt pretty comfortable running 6:20 pace back. Then once I stopped I crashed so hard and was really wiped the rest of the day. It's a big week and I hit those reps hard, so it makes sense. Good news is zero calf issue whatsoever, that was a slight concern as it's been on/off bothering me.

Sunday: 11 Miles- Richmond, RI

Just needed 11 to hit 100. In previous highest weeks I've usually been at 80-82 at the end of Saturday and done 14 to hit 94-96. This week doing bigger runs mid week meant being at 89 and only needing 11 to hit 100 despite it being quite a bit more than 94 or 96. I felt very fatigued the first half mile or so, then eased into nicely. Moderately hilly loop on Hillsdale road and back on Carolina Nooseneck, mostly quiet roads. A few truck drivers that came close to me, seems to be a much bigger problem in rural Richmond versus coastal Westerly or Charlestown. I was getting fatigued the last few miles again then when I was almost done I made a sharp turn into the roundabout (because for some reason, the crosswalk isn't plowed), slipped on some ice and hit the ground hard. A bit banged up in the hand, knee and right rib area. I was concerned I had bruised my rib but the discomfort decreased significantly during the day and it seems okay. I never looked at pace as I had the navigation up and ran 6:38 pace- definitely a bit faster than I need to be going on a recovery day with hills.

Weekly Total: 100.64 miles (a PR)

January Total: 381.9 Miles. Highest January ever, which is typically a high mileage month for me but not quite my highest ever month as October 2023 had 383.

Excellent from a mileage standpoint, and other than getting very fatigued Saturday held up pretty well. The cold has been crazy, typically I'll have 1-2 runs under 20 degrees a year and it's been nearly every day for the past 10 days. I am adjusting but I definitely prefer my lows in the 20s rather than the single digits. Surprised how well I've been able to train in it though.

Right calf clearly got strained at the end of Philadelphia and hasn't been quite right since. It's been fairly manageable with a bad day just feeling really tight and pulling a bit on my achilles. It's never stopped me from running my planned mileage or my workouts. I have been heating it, doing the normal rolling out/stretching and hitting with the massage gun every night which seems to have kept it from getting bad but hasn't resolved it either. Maybe one day I just need to hit with the massage gun for 30 minutes straight but that's a lot of effort and can get quite uncomfortable working on those knots. I've kept with lifting twice a week, but haven't done the ankle work from PT consistently as I hardly have any time with work and running on weekdays and the calf seems like the priority. My ankles both seem good right now, probably not 100% but could almost certainly benefit from more regular work. I haven't been doing abs at all, I had a routine going in all past blocks but I don't think it does a whole lot for me and the extra fatigue/time is too great of a cost right now, at least in a big week like this.

January was a pretty fantastic month for running, cold/snowy weather aside. I ran my whole Philadelphia season 5 pounds heavier than the Boston block and struggling to hit the workouts at the level of Boston until the final 3 weeks or so. It didn't matter- I ran 6 minutes faster at Philadelphia but I didn't understand why I could never seem to hit the same paces.

That wasn't the case this time around, even with most workouts in tights instead of shorts due to the cold. My Wednesday workouts at 5:30 in the dark were surprisingly solid as well. And I've been feeling fantastic aerobically. 4 good long runs with 2 in Mystic and 2 at Burlingame, all at paces matching or exceeding my Boston block efforts.

I raced once in January- a 3K at the Track at New Balance: Suffolk Invite. I was kind of dreading this one as indoor track isn't always the most fun. My goal is to break 8:40 in the 3K this year after a disappointing near miss last January where I had 8:37-8:38 coming but lost 3-4 seconds due to a fall in the final lap. I figured if I could open sub-8:50 I'd have a shot this year, and closer to 8:45 would be even better. I had opened in 8:46 last year but had two races under my belt then versus zero this year so it'd be understandable if I was a little rusty.

Waited around all weekend before making the drive up to Boston. Good thing I got there when I did as they called last chance to check in for the 3K as this Suffolk meet has this stupid declare rule. If you haven't declared 3ish hours before your race they scratch you and that's that. So get there 2 hours before instead? Not racing. The heats lined up almost perfectly for my attempt, got towed out in 2:53 and 4:38. The indoor 3K almost always sucks and certainly in the opening one, but it just didn't this time. I willed myself to get to 2k as usual, and it came quicker and easier mentally than usual. 2K in 5:50 and a 2:52 close for 8:42.61 with a 67 last 400 (34, 33). Calves and hamstrings felt pretty strained in the last 1K but held up well overall. I was super happy with that for an opener and first race since Philadelphia. 4 seconds faster than last years opening 3K, within a second of a PR, and only 2.7 seconds off sub-8:40. That goal seems very reasonable as long as I'm not fatigued in training or get screwed with a bad heat again. I'll be going for it next Friday at the Armory. The Track at New Balance is such a nice facility and pretty convenient to get to, just wish there were more meets here I could run.

February will be more a racing month. I was supposed to do the Winter Wonderland 5 Mile but it got cancelled due to the snowstorm. I'll give sub-8:40 a shot and then maybe jump into another track race depending on how it goes- have a Yale college meet and the USATF-NE champs as options there. Finish off the month with the Wilmington Half, possible PR attempt.
