2013 in review and 2014 goals

2013 in Review
Sub 5:45 Mile- Easily broken in April. New PR is 5:31 and hope to beat that next spring.
Sub 19:30 5K- Broken in April at RI State Police 5K with 19:21, then again at fun runs with 19:01, and again at Schonning with my current PR, 18:33.
Sub 45 10K- Ran two this year, both going sub-45. At Niantic I crushed it with my PR, 39:59, but still beat 45 at Christmas 10K this month with 42:31.
Sub 55 Lil' Rhody- Was close with 55:32, and will keep the same goal of 55, which I can probably beat.
Sub 1:10 Blessing- Beat goal with time of 1:07:47, but was one of my most exhausting runs of the year. If I decide to run this again I will only set a goal that a few minutes under that.
Sub 35 Clamdigger- Clamdigger was a 5K which I wasn't happy about.
Half-Marathon- Ran Surftown and easily beat my 1:45 goal by more than 15 mins. I will be doing surftown again and this year's surftown was my favorite race.
Yearly Mileage Goal- Easily beat 500 with 632 miles. Mileage shown below. Most Mileage in September with 81 and least in February with 17.

2013 Miles: 632

April Mileage: 81

March Mileage: 48
February Mileage: 17

January mileage: 36
2013 # of Runs: 159
Goal: 500 Miles

3 Triathlons- Was a stupid goal(I should of done a time goal) and didn't beat it but will definitely do 3 this year.(Oh My Goddard Olympic, Crabman, and Block.)
Do a race every month- Not positive but I don't think I ran a race in march. I didn't like this goal either and I am not disappointed about not making this one.
Fun Runs- Goal was to run sub-23 every week and actually ran sub-21 every week. I liked this goal and was happy to achieve it.
School Sports Goals
Track
3000 M- Beat 10:45 goal barely with 10:43 time.
1500 M- Beat 5:20 with 5:08.
800M- Beat 2:40 with time of 2:30
Fastest Male- Hard to compare but was most likely the best male on the team. Was only male to score for the state meet.
X-Country
Fastest Male- Was definitely fastest male.
Team has Winning Record- I have no idea what the final record was but I think It was about even.

2014 Goals

Mile- Sub 5:25. I doubt I will improve greatly in the mile so I think this is reasonable. (PR-5:31)
5K- Sub 18:15. I sure I can get this goal. (PR-18:33)
10K- Sub 39. I can probably beat this. (PR-39:59)
Lil' Rhody- Sub 55. Kept the same goal as last year since I didn't beat it . (PR-55:32)
Blessing- Not sure if I want to run this but If I do the goal will be sub 1:07. (PR-1:07:47)
Clamdigger-Not sure if it is 5 miles but if it is I'll try to go sub 34:30.
Mileage- Hoping for 800+ miles for the year. (Had 632 in 2013.)
Tris- PR in both Crab and Block and do well in Goddard.
Fun Runs- Sub-20 every week. This will be one of my toughest goals.
School Running
Track- Sub-10:30 3000, Sub-5:00 1500(but not sure if I am going to run this distance, and Sub 2:25 800. Also I hope I will place in top 3 in the state meet for 3000.
X-Country- Will be in high school for this so I am just hoping to be in the top 3 on the team and top freshman.
Indoor Track- Starts very late 2014, so wont post these goals until this date next year

Sunday Half Marathon

Sunday: Surftown Half Marathon

Got a good night's sleep and arrive at surftown. A 4 mile warmup with muddy and dad. At the start, I line up with the 1:30ish sign and soon after the race starts. Eventually I reach the first mile at 6:22. At first I don't notice this is pretty fast. I'm just thinking 6:20's. That's good. A little while later I realize I'm running really fast and my goal was to do sub-7:30 pace. Boumenout catches up to me at mile 2. After losing on the bridge I never saw him again. The loop there went by quickly. They screwed up the 3  mile mark. About 1 mile later I see my cross country coach at a waterstop and try to take water, but get gatorade. It was really nasty. The next stop is on fisherman's where I took a GU. I kept waiting for a waterstop on watch hill road but It was 2 more miles until the next stop. After that was a tough hill in a loop turnaround which I saw my dad before entering. Next was ocean view highway where i got passed by the 5th and 6th females. Ocean view highway went by really quickly. Soon after bayberry , then maplewood where i repassed the 6th place woman and finished on atlantic. I got a glass and hat after for an award which i thought was really lame.

Block Island Tri 8-3-13

BI tri earlier today. Left house at 1:20, and took the 1:15 fast ferry to block island. We got there, biked 1 mile to the transition, and found that someone had taken my dad and I's spot. Later we just moved his bike over and got our spot back. We got our stuff (bib, pins, chip, T-shirt, and cap.) I had got a Navy Blue cap for Wave 5 (The first men's wave and also Tom's wave) The transition was really tight.

Transition Area

Tom, Dad and I did a 1 mile warm-up on the beach and got ready for the tri. We all jumped in the water and there were rocks everywhere on the bottom of the ocean. It was very easy to kick your foot against a rock. It was also very shallow and most of the swim course you could touch the bottom. Soon the first women's wave went off and the next couple went off shortly after (1 minute apart). About 3 more minutes my wave went off.

The Swim: I ran off towards the flag you had to turn around and I saw Tom ahead. I ran pretty slow knowing I was great at the swim and would let faster swimmers go ahead so I would be kicked or punched much. Before the swim I saw one 12 year old and one 15 year old in the front of my wave before the start. I quickly passed the 15 year old right away on the swim and never saw him again for the rest of the tri. The buoy seemed really far out. I eventually reached the first buoy and sighted the second one ahead of me. I started to hear someone swimming behind me and someone from the next wave had passed me. I started passing people from waves ahead of me and people from waves behind me started passing me. It seemed like I was swimming in a straight line for the second buoy but I was almost at the second buoy and I saw I had swam a little to the side. I swam diagonally to the second buoy and the current pulled me right around the second buoy and also helped me swim easier to the beach. The swim back to the beach went by quickly and I was soon out of the water. My final swim time was 12:12(4 seconds ahead of my dad), and I finished in 124th place.

T1: I ran out and easily found my bike spot and I was the first one from my transition spot out of the water. I rinsed my feet put on my shoes and my dad had just came out of the water. I put on my shirt, helmet, took my bike and started riding.

Bike: I started biking. My dad passes me instantly. It's about 1 mile flat until the hilly loop. This course was so hilly. That flat mile passes so quickly. After that you take a left onto a road with the biggest hill of the course. I shifted my gears really low and it was still so hard getting up the hill. I so exhausted from that hill also thinking I'm going to have to do this hill again on loop 2. There were a series of more hills after that and soon on the downhills I kept getting passed. There were a couple of sharp turns which I had to slow down for. I finished loop 1 and shifted to my lowest gears this time to go up the hill. It was easier this time up then the first loop. It was the same hills again and most of them weren't too bad but there were a few more I had to work to get up. When I would get to the top of a hill I wasn't ready to shift my gears up because I was so exhausted. On the second loop I was passed that much, whereas on the first loop I'd say I was passed by 40-60 people. At the end of the second loop I didn't know which turn to turn left at to get started on the run. I just focused on the people ahead of me. I kept going and I saw some signs and It said second loop turn left and the arrow pointed someone's driveway. Then I saw people turn on a road so I just went behind them. I had been going pretty slow before but I went a lot faster on this road and passed some more people. At the end of this road you take a left and I could recognize the upcoming road. I finished 52:10 in 210 place.

T2: I found my transition area, just put my bike down, popped off my helmet, shoes, and ran out of the there towards the beach.

Run: I headed out towards the run onto the beach and grabbed a water at the first waterstop. I continued past up to the point where there were rocks. I got past there saw skip hoffman running back from the turnaround and then reached the turnaround myself. I took another water and drank the whole cup again.(Usually I just have sips) It was easy getting past the rocks the first time but this time people were getting in my way and I was avoiding rocks while also having to go around people. I passed skip hoffman on the run after getting through the rocks. I saw Tom finishing up next and way past the turnaround. Next I saw my Dad, then Mark Burbelo and Steve Schonning. It seemed to take forever but eventually I reached the second turnaround. Over the course of the Run, no one bumped into me, no one passed me and I only had trouble with rocks twice. I saw Dave Seddon about halfway back. I thought I was finishing up soon after but then I saw the finish was about half a mile to go. I eventually reached the end. I went up past the building. It was hard moving because the sand was really soft and there were rocks everywhere and finished at 1:43 something and my final wave time was  1:36:50 in 101st place. My run was 32:28 in 15th place. I ended up passing 129 people on the run.

Finishing the Tri

I ended winning my age group (14 & under) over two other people. Tom and Mark Burbelo also won theirs. We got a wooden plaque and a special T-Shirt. I took a shower got my stuff. We had dinner at a nice hotel and took home the fast ferry with schonning and Duda.

I think I liked Crabman better because of the easy bike, but I definetly liked this tri and would do it again. I am considering other Tris for next year too. Next race is Run 4 Kerri tommorow.

Crabman Tri 7-28-13

Today I did the crabman. This was my second tri and second year doing the crabman. It starts very early in the morning. The first wave went off at 6:45 and my wave was second. I woke up at 4:30, but didn't get as much sleep as I wanted. When we got there it was a 1 mile bike to transition. The race started soon after. I jumped into the ocean before the race. The water wasn't cold at all. It was also very calm and great swimming conditions. I did much better than last year's swim. Last year I couldn't see out of my googles very well, I swam the wrong way and was one of the last ones out of the water. This year I thought I did fine. I was nervous for the swim before but definetley not as nervous as crutchley. Soon the first wave went off (45 & over) and my dad was in that. It wasn't long after that until my wave (Wave 2- 35&under) which also had Jeff Duda, Tom, and Mark in it. I ran in the water and got kicked and hit as I'm sure almost everyone did. It cleared up and I had plenty of room to get to the first buoy before I started kicked again. It was also tight right after the first buoy. It looked like to me after going around the first buoy the second buoy was diagionally away from the beach. I told people that but most of them said it was a straight line. It took some time but I eventually reached  the second buoy and it was so quick back to the beach. I got out of the water. My final swim time was 10:15 in 178th place for the swim. My T1 time was 2:45 and then I wheeled my bike over to the place. Getting on and pedaling is hard for me because my bike has cages over the pedals and it takes a few seconds to put it on. I got one foot on and one of the cages came apart. I stepped to the side and put it back on with one of the assistant's help. That cost me a few minutes. I started out biking then. So many people flew by me in the bike. I had the taste of salt water in mouth so i rinsed it off with my drink. I had my GU right before the highway on the first loop. There were a couple sections where you had to slow down for sharp turns. Last year I saw most people I knew on the bike, but this year I didn't see anyone I knew. The bike seems really long for me especially because there are two loops. I had my drink every once in in a while. I was exhausted riding the bike. I probably passed 20 people and got passed by 150. I didn't count but i counted for the run which is my strength. When I finished the bike there were a lot people getting off the bike when I was. I finished 39:39 in 324th place. there were orange flags on the way up to t2 and I thought we had to stay on the left of them and the other side was for run, but you don't go that way in the run. I got stuck behind some guy wheeling his bike a little too slow after I saw people passing on the right I went around him and into T2. I wheeled my bike in a found a rack. I couldn't find my brother's or father's bikes in that rack so I knew it was the wrong rack I was just one over. Last year it was a different setup and much harder to find your racks. I didn't change shoes and left T2 after putting my bike in the correct rack. My T2 time was 1:01. I counted the number I passed over the run. I was pretty tired for the run. It was up a road then take a left and a turnaround back the road on the left. I took water at the first stop. On the way to the first waterstop I passed a boy who had the number 13 on his leg, so he must of been in my age group. I ran back and saw elise on the way back. (She was one of the only people I knew and I recongnized during the tri.) After the turnaround you followed that road back out the main road and up the main road to turn on another side road. At the end of the other side road there was a turnaround with a waterstop. On the way back I saw elise again. I ran back to the main road which takes you all the way back. My dad caught up to me because he was already done and ran me back. I passed two people at the final sprint. I passed 63 people on the run and no one passed me. My run time was 20:21 and I got 23rd place. My final time was 1:14:00 in 158th place. I thought I had won my age group but I was in 14-19 which I thought was unfair beacue last year it was 1-14 instead of 1-13 and I would of won my age group. They had some refreshments after.
I didn't feel sore from blessing the other day. I have block island tri coming up and I am not looking foward to the hilly bike there but am looking foward to the 4 mile beach run. I was thinking about doing other tris next year.

7-26-13 Blessing of the Fleet

Last night I did the blessing. I was feeling really nervous for it all week. It was one of the hardest runs ever for me. I finished 137th out of 2,704 people, 34th out of 132 in my age group and with a time of 1:07:47. Ran with my dad. We got there a little later then I expected and didn't have as much time as I would want before the race. The first couple miles went by really quickly, especially the first one. I took water 3 or 4 times but barely drank anyting. The whole race was pretty much crowded. We caught up to Mike B after 3 miles and stuck somewhere near until the end of the race. It went back and forth and he ended up finishing slightly ahead. There two miles on a highway that I didn't like. After 3 miles I got out of breath. After 5 my legs and feet got tired. I got a cramp after 7 or 8. We started to pass a lot of walkers at 7 or 8  miles. My last mile was 6:31, the fastest and my pace finished at 6:47. I looked up the results and a couple of people I competed against in Track on different teams ran the race.
Here are the Results- 42nd Annual Blessing of the Fleet- http://www.coolrunning.com/results/13/ri/Jul26_Blessi_set1.shtml
After the race I was really hungry. On the way out Mike B and my Dad said they were soaking wet, but I was completely dry. They must went swiming or something. I now have crabman tommorow and that should be fun.
