Weekly Log: October 12 to 18

We were originally scheduled to run Brown Invite on Saturday, but our team dropped out. So I ran a race instead- Run for the Penguins in Mystic. Had heard of it before, but never actually ran it. Meets resume next for us.

Monday: 6 Miles. Ran with my phone using the Strava app. While is more comfortable running with the watch the strava app had cool features like mapping what you have done already and showing every mile while you're still running. I used the map to explore a few new roads and have an easier time getting back. A good start of the week run.

Tuesday: 6.5 Miles. Solo run Monday but was joined by three Tuesday, until two broke off after three miles. Ran in the cemetery a little before heading back. Great temperatures.

Wednesday: 5 Miles. Instead of running Narragansett repeats or fingers (hills off Narragansett ave), we ran Park Ave, which had one steep section. Seven times up and down, and it was easily the hardest hill workout we've done. I'm starting to dislike hills and would rather have a track workout. Difficulty of Workout: 4/5.

Thursday: 7 Miles, two-person run. Amazing conditions for running and felt pretty good the entire time.

Friday: 5 miles, repeat of Wednesday. Another seven park ave repeats, and since I felt better, I ended up going a little faster. Didn't feel as bad a as Wednesday's, but still tough. Difficulty: 3/5.

Saturday: 7 Miles, Run for the Penguins 5K. Based on previous winner's time I thought I would be able to win it. Dad and I got our bibs the night before. This helped because registration lines were busy day of. $35 post-registration fee was outrageous.

The bibs were nice.
We warmed up, and it turns out the starting road only goes out for a half a mile before turning onto a field. I decided to wear my road racing flats over my 890s even though there was a little bit of trail in the first and final mile. I changed into them, headed to the crowded starting line and the race was off.

Mile 1: I had heard from runners who had done the race before that you needed to get out fast because kids get in the way, but it was more like you need to line up in the front. I surged out immediately into second place, behind a middle school runner. After a minute, I went right by him. I glanced at my watch a few times and pace was always between 5:00 and 5:10 before hitting the field portion. I liked the field part, even though I felt it slowed me down. It went across one field, then another before entering a trail. The trail was tough, (or at least for a road race) but went by quickly. I glanced back and saw Dad in second. The trail exited on grass which you ran across to neighborhood roads. Mile 1 ended around there. 5:22 (right about what I wanted for mile 1).

Mile 2: Mile 2 was hilly. Right at the beginning, it went up a hill which slowed me down but wasn't too bad. It balanced out with a downhill right after. Then it turned to an even bigger hill, which was tough to run up. I felt that hill was really slowing me down. Average pace was pretty much high 5:20s for the rest of it. The course marshals directed me wrong, and I ended up making a wrong turn but fortunately it was minor. I had to wait a few seconds for clarification at another turn, but got back on track. I looked back once, and a red shirted guy was in second, Dad in third. Mile 2 ended: 5:35. Those hills slowed me down.

Mile 3: Just a little bit left in the neighborhood, before turning back into the trail, running across the field, and back on the starting road. I felt like I was slowing on the trail and field, so I pushed it on the last road. I also thought the red shirt guy was coming for me, and I looked back to see I had a big lead. The finish wasn't exactly the same as the start so it was a little confusing where to go, but I managed. I saw low 17s on the clock, then sprinted to the finish. 17:10 official time, 2nd place 17:54. Results.

Prize

I think I could've been a few seconds faster if I didn't stop to figure out where I was going. I think if the trails and/or hills were not part of the course, I could've broken 17. I was still happy with my time and the win. I liked the course.

Sunday: 5 Miles, watched Dad do the RI Duathalon in Burlingame. Cut it short since I didn't really feel like running.

Weekly Total: 41.5 Miles
