1K Recap

The indoor season is pretty much over, and that means I have run my last 600 and 1000 as a sophomore. I walked away from both with disappointment...failing to meets my finals goals for each. I only ran two 600s and while the first was great (huge PR), and I wanted to hit another PR on the second and that didn't happen. But it was the 1000 that really mattered.

Even though the 1000 was my third most important event this season, it was the event I ran the most, due to running many doubles. I'll save the rest of the season to recap on in a combined post with outdoor recap, but I'm done with the 1000 until December, so I'll review that now.

I ran my first 1000m in December 2014, at the RITCA Invitational. My time was 2:55, equivalent to 35 seconds per lap. I lowered that by a second at the URI Classic three weeks later, then had a huge PR at a dual meet a few weeks later, getting it all the way down to 2:51. I struggled in it two days later, running 2:54 once again. That day I had a 3K PR and it had taken too much out of me. I came back at Class to have a small PR, then finally dipped under 2:50 at Freshman States, motivated by getting passed with a lap to go. See below.

I did not make these graphs.
So while that was a clear trend down, with only one meet that I didn't PR in, Sophomore year was much different for the 1K. They were all over the place.

I started with a huge PR of 2:45, once again at RITCA. That was a great 1000- I beat competitors I didn't expect to beat, felt great, and finished strong.  I didn't run it for two more weeks. I ran it a dual meet, and did fairly well, running 2:46. The next one was great, much better than expected. I felt great again, and finished 3rd overall. This was at URI Classic, bringing my PR down to 2:42. Next was a dual meet two days later, where I stuck with the leader for four laps, then completely dropped off as he had a tremendous kick and I had nothing. I finished in 2:47 there. A week later, I ran the slowest time of the season, completely falling off the pace with two to go, and the last 400 was around 75 seconds. I finished in 2:49, slower than my fastest time of freshman. The next one was a facility PR, as I ran 2:43 and outkicked a rival in the last 50 meters. Then the PR finally came, with a repeat of what happened at RITCA, with me starting in the back, then passing people throughout and finishing strong. I ran 2:41. Now it was a quest to break 2:40. It...didn't happen. I had a bad 1000 at class, simply because I had a bad start and getting around people was too tiring. I finished 2:44 there. At states, my legs were just worn out from not enough recovery and running the 3K earlier. I finished in 2:47. See chart below.

I never really focused or cared much about the 1000 freshman year, but I certainly did as a sophomore. While I'm somewhat disappointed I never broke 2:40, or even broke 2:41, but was happy I had a few standout races.

Here are the best ones, where I met or beat my own expectations, being extremely pleased with the final result. Ranked worst to best, of course.

6. Division Meet (Sophomore)- My time wasn't a PR, but I was pleased with my place, and that I had something at the end.

5. Dual #4 (Freshman)- A giant PR is always something to celebrate.

4. Freshman States (Freshman)- Lead the whole to get passed with a lap to go, then passed back to take the win and a two second PR.

3. Last Chance (Sophomore)- Felt terrible immediately, but was able to make up places and have a strong last 400 to run what is my current PR.

2. RITCA Invitiational (Sophomore)- Felt great out there, and had a 4-second PR, and beat some strong competitors to score in a huge meet.

1. URI Classic (Sophomore)- stayed with the leader and felt great, hitting fast splits to a 3-second PR of 2:42.

So for next, I'm obviously shooting for a sub-2:40. I'll like to do this as early as possible into the season, so I have of beating the school record senior year. I think it is 2:32 (according to milesplit), held by Andrew Springer, but will look into it as it gets closer. It would be difficult, but I'd like to be able to run a 2:35 by the end of Junior year. Hopefully that 1K chart will look more like my freshman one, and not the sophomore one.
