Weekly Log: January 7 to 13

Last week of training in RI, still higher mileage but not a whole of effort.

Monday: 8 Miles

Around the Pond loop at lunchtime with Dad. Was expecting a very easy 7 minute recovery pace, yet ended up doing 6:30 until the last few miles into the wind. Cruising the whole way, pretty enjoyable. A bit cold at 25 (?) degrees.

Tuesday: 10 Miles

Only workout of the week, wish I was more disciplined to do real work. Pretty light session. Was considering mile repeats either at Ninigret or on the track but remembered that my Coach had said to run hills every week and since I had skipped last week (forgot/lazy), I figured it was best not to repeat. Despite doing so many hills week one, kept things short and easy with a 5xNarragansett followed 5x200 hard. Moderate narragansett effort, heavy as usual but had more in the tank. 200 felt really fast although some of that had to be not wearing spikes on a wet track: 30/30/31/31/32. Difficulty: 3/5. Full 3 mile cooldown. Starting to enjoy early morning hill workouts from the Y.

Wednesday: 9 Miles

Carter Preserve. Late, solo and rainy as well as feeling pretty weak out there made for a not so enjoyable run. Felt weirdly bored too, seemed like I was out there forever. Played with the idea of throwing in random surges/sprints to make things interesting but just didn't have the energy for that, especially on the harder stuff. Finally incorporated a 20s on/60s off mini fartlek on the grassland but legs pooped out quickly and I started to feel so bad I bagged the last mile. Hopefully I will have more pleasant experiences here moving forward.

Thursday: 9 Miles

Charlestown Roads in the morning with Dad. We did what felt like an insanely hilly route, especially the long stretch of Buckeye Brook road yet only got 600ft elevation gain (which is hilly just far less than it felt like). Legs were really struggling to keep up with my pace today, felt very tight/heavy on all the ups.

Friday: 12 Miles

Needed a little more mileage but didn't feel like doing straight 12, so split into a double. 4 from the house at noon, very easy and relaxed local road loop. Felt really good and running for just 27 minutes was a really nice change of pace.

Was feeling terrible after and not looking forward to the run, but once I got out there I had a change of heart. Headlamp run in Woody Hill with Dad, felt great and really enjoyed the dark trails which added a new challenge and atmosphere I hadn't seen before.

Saturday: 12 Miles

Ran the last 12 of Dad's long run, felt mostly good except my legs were pretty tired at the end. Nice comfortable 7 minute for the majority of it with slight pick up in the last few. Varied it up by doing some Charlestown roads that I don't see often.

Sunday: 12 Miles

Duval/Browning mix with plenty of everything including the awesome rocky and hilly yet easy Duval trails, overgrown Browning trails with some ice, dirt roads and regular roads. Felt really good until the last mile where my legs were tired again. Nice to get the full 12 to PR on weekly mileage rather than the planned 10.

Weekly Total: 72 Miles (Weekly Mileage PR!)
YTD Total: 129 Miles

Weekly Highlight: Another quiet, boring week but I definitely enjoyed Tuesday's run the most and want to continue doing some hill workouts.

Weekly Lowlight: Nothing really bad this week, except the way I felt on Thursday.

Back to UNH next week, including a race at UNH Saturday. I'll try to get in a good 3K, despite the limitations of the slow 160m oval. Kinda bummed break is over but it's probably a good time to start some actual training, I have definitely slacked off somewhat.
