Weekly Log: March 13 to 19

Return to training with no set races for a bit. Shins bothering me this week, a problem I've had in the past but fortunately not bad enough to reduce training.

Monday: 6 Miles- Westerly, RI

Had a set loop in mind but when I got down to Atlantic ave I had some stomach distress and detoured to the state beach port-a-potties. Shins were achy on this run (this issue started sometime around the past weekend).

Tuesday: 12 Miles

AM 8 Miles- Westerly, RI

Got tired of doing the same loops all the time so threw the classic "around the (winnapaug) pond" loop in the rotation. Pretty simple and good loop. I picked a terrible day for this though with horrific conditions: absolute downpour at 44 degrees and 18mph winds. Headwind on Atlantic ave for 2.5 miles is easily some of the worst conditions I've ever run in. Just fully blasted by the wind and heavy rain in the dark. Also having to run around flooded sections of the road. The rain was hitting so hard it was stinging my face and legs. Once I turned off Atlantic the run went from miserable to fine. Can't complain about bad conditions after this one!

PM 4 Miles- Norwich, CT

Typical Mohegan Park loop. Strava data shows it was raining but I can't remember this one at all. Getting tired of this route but there's no other post-work double options without going on really hilly and technical trails. Starting to feel consistently flat on this with something getting uncomfortably tight.

Wednesday: 10 Miles- Charlestown, RI

Plan was to do a track workout but opted against it with 20mph winds. Went for a mostly protected Burlingame campground road loop. Didn't have any set workout in mind- so opted for 6-5-4-3-2-1 minutes on/half rest off. Ended up running fairly consistent around 5:25-5:35 pace which I thought was fine/solid given some small rollers in there and the occasional big wind blast. Ended up averaging 6:16 pace for 10 miles- fast run for me. Difficulty: 2/5. Shins weren't bad but not great either.

Thursday: 11 Miles

AM 7 Miles- Westerly, RI

Not a fun run, felt really dark and I don't enjoy the dark under any circumstances. Shins were pretty achy and uncomfortable throughout. Mentally felt like a bit of grind.

PM 4 Miles- Norwich, CT

Mohegan Park loop.

Friday: 11 Miles

AM 7 Miles- Westerly, RI

Moonlight loop which is probably my favorite run from home (shore road to moonlight, back via quiet neighborhood roads). Shin was better than the previous day. Unexpected bathroom break around 4 miles, this is getting frustratingly frequent on the early mornings.

PM 4 Miles- Groton, CT

Bluff double. Great loop but legs didn't feel great. Twisted ankle fairly hard in Haley Farm (looking at a group ahead of me instead of the ground).

Saturday: 10 Miles

8 Miles- New London, CT

Moved planned track workout to the weekend after the mid-week massive winds. This was a bad run and disappointment in many ways. Shins felt really achy and uncomfortable throughout. Decent track (New London HS) but bad roads to warm-up and cool-down. Plan was 6x1K + 4s and 2s. Felt frigid stretching and about to start on the track (not that cold so idk why). Got going on the 1Ks. Was already off through 1 in 3:12 (goal 3:07, 400m jog rest) with a tougher wind than expected. After feeling weak/slow on the 2nd and seeing a shocking 3:26 I stopped. Felt like crap instantly. Did a 1600m at a moderately hard effort in 5:31 which is really no good as that's road tempo pace. Few mile cooldown with more shin achiness. Just a bad day/run. Difficulty: 5/5.

2 Miles- East Lyme, CT

Was going to meet up with Dad after his 5K race in East Lyme. Took too long and missed the race then couldn't find parking near the race area. Ended up just doing a niantic loop, shins felt a bit better than before.

Sunday: 17 Miles- West Greenwich, RI

West Greenwich mixer running rural dirt roads, paved roads and some trails in Big River. With Andrew. Shins felt good and I felt good throughout, enjoyable run and nice mental boost after struggling on Saturday. Good route, just quiet throughout. Felt surprisingly strong and never especially tired. Can feel a big difference in long run strength over the last few years- was gassed from pretty much anything 14+ in 2019. Whereas I could have gone for another mile or two here.

Weekly Total: 78 Miles

Weekly Highlight: Good long run Sunday. Happy with 17 and feeling good. Best days for shins as well.

Weekly Lowlight: Both Saturday's failure of a workout and having a lot of shin discomfort. Both pretty frustrating and disappointing.

Movies Watched: Creed*, Creed 2*, Creed 3, American Sniper*
