Will Rogers 10K- Weekly Log: July 1 to 7

Local 10K hilly 4th of July race.

Monday: 8 Miles- Camarillo, CA

Felt really weak, which continued through most of the week - not sure what was happening with that.

Tuesday: 11 Miles- Thousand Oaks, CA

Typical Vista del Mar/Rancho Satwiwa.

Wednesday: 8 Miles- Thousand Oaks, CA

Felt awful on this one. Pre-race.

Thursday: 14 Miles- Los Angeles, CA

Will Rogers 10K + 3 mile warm-up + 5 mile trail cooldown. Like much of the week, I felt terrible and really weak waking up. Yet ran a great race, 18 second 10K PR with 450' of elevation gain (probably worth about a minute faster on a fast course). One of the most surprising performances in a long time, really was expecting a mediocre or bad effort.

Explored temescal canyon trails on cooldown, which were kind of fun, actually somewhat shaded (although didn't matter with the fog) but overgrowth and crowds ruined it. People in L.A. seem to have really bad trail etiquette (they don't get out of the way).

In the evening, plan was to do a 4 mile double. After the drive back, I had some knee stiffness walking around. Didn't think much of it, until I went to double here and the joint felt so messed up that I couldn't really run on it without risking injury.

Friday: 10 Miles

Lunchtime 3 Miles- Thousand Oaks, CA

Went to Peppertree as I didn't know if I could run today - pretty much fine/normal. So strange. I didn't feel fueled for a hot 10 mile run (89 degrees on this one!) so I finished at 3 and opted to do the rest later.

Evening 7 Miles- Thousand Oaks, CA

Santa rosa valley shorter loop. It's a nice loop but I felt absolutely terrible. Not only flat but my chest was really hurting for some reason.

Saturday: 11 Miles- Malibu, CA

Typical Mugu loop. Legs locked up pretty bad on the climb.

Sunday: 20 Miles- Santa Barbara, CA

I knew I needed to get in a final 20 miler this weekend. I figured if I recovered really well from the race I could get in a good workout. Wasn't feeling great so opted just for an easier hilly run exploring Santa Barbara which I had never properly been to.

About 5 miles along the coast on bike paths or roads, then turned away from the water and a long climb. This was mostly road but I wore my pack so I could have water. Some light climbing in mile 6, but then got much steeper with 400' of gain in 7, which took me out. Felt pretty tired and flat legs on that, and took a long a break with gel + water at the end of the mile. I was a little concerned I felt so bad after just doing 600' of the planned 2000', especially with steeper stuff coming up. Felt similarly bad on the mile 8 road climb, then 2 miles of trail with about 1,200' combined gain. Lots of singletrack there, and about half of it shaded which was really nice. I weirdly felt much more comfortable on the trail despite it being steeper, maybe the slow grind of singletrack is easier than the road. Felt pretty hot on the ridge.

Now a long descent 5ish mile on very scenic ridge roads where I could see the ocean, although it was smoggy. Really cool up there, roads were very quiet. Got tired again around 12, then took another long-ish break. Gutted out the rest pretty tired but mostly downhill. A water refill stop in a stream around 15, roads got busier after that near downtown, then a break at 17. Felt beat finishing it up.

Didn't feel great on this, but glad to get it done. Really nice city and scenery.

Weekly Total: 83 Miles

Weekly Highlight: 10K went about as well as it could, and was satisfying after running a lot of really mediocre races post-LA. Not much room for improvement in that one.

Weekly Lowlight: Felt bad/terrible in every non-race run. I guess that's not just a bad thing if the race goes well, but not a particularly fun week of running. Especially with an injury scare.

Movies Watched: Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon, Memories of Murder
