Back to medium distance trail races after a short road detour for the Portland Half Marathon. This week would be the Kodiak 23K, my first UTMB race and my first race at altitude. Also no significant travel as this race was in Southern California.
Monday: 6 Miles- Los Angeles, CA
Ran a loop in San Pedro, the southern most neighborhood in Los Angeles. Super foggy and windy out. Actually quite nice and relatively quiet, spent much of the run on coastal roads with either big shoulders or zero traffic and some dirt paths as well.
Tuesday: 10 Miles- Los Angeles, CA
Elysian Park. I have zero memory of this run.
Wednesday: 12 Miles- Los Angeles, CA
Griffith Park, but exploring a lot of new ground. Ran out to the hollywood sign view area, then left the park and surprisingly lots of dirt paths still there and quiet ridge roads in the hollywood hills. Short bit on the hollywood reservoir, which I remember from an April run, before a substantial climb back into the park (about 1,000'). A section on steep roads before switching to singletrack, which got very steep. Apparently climbed 900' in a mile, which I don't think I've done in California before. Trail was also really rocky and had few switchbacks, felt much more like Northeast terrain. The trail after that was super technical as well, a few times on downhills where I had to stop and lower myself down because of a steep, rocky drop. Super overgrown trail after the hollywood sign then back on the usual dirt roads.
Thursday: 10 Miles- Pasadena, CA
Arroyo seco lollipop, added a trail at the north end of Rose Bowl loop to make it 10. Some construction going on but unlike some times in the past year, it was easy to work around.
Friday: 7 Miles- Santa Monica, CA
Santa Monica lollipop. This is a good route, but unfortunately it's not a great option because the I-10 traffic is usually terrible. I thought it'd be fine for today but didn't check the traffic going back and that added quite a bit of time. Legs did not feel great.
Saturday: 17 Miles- Big Bear Lake, CA
Kodiak by UTMB 23K. Ran decently, not great. Race recap coming eventually.
Sunday: 12 Miles- Los Angeles, CA
Griffith Park loop with Matt. I was kind of disappointed I bragged about how well I knew the trails here now and then had to stop at the first section because I got confused.
Weekly Total: 74 Miles
Weekly Highlight: First UTMB race
Weekly Lowlight: The altitude during said UTMB race feeling really rough
Movies Watched: I haven't watched a movie over a month as I'm watching the TV show Dexter
Wow, it's hard to keep up on the blog now. Every race means being busy with the race and travel, so not only do I not have time to write the blogs those days/weekends but it adds an extra blog post to write. Hopefully I can completely catch up on everything by Christmas time.
