Breakneck Point Half- Weekly Log: April 28 to May 4

Core training week for Ultra Trail Snowdonia 50K, getting in a good run at Blue Hills Wednesday then a race at Breakneck Point Half Sunday.

Monday: 0 Miles

Final day off post-Boston, as I took every other day off (Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday-Monday) for a total of 4 off days. I think if I wanted a short recovery then quickly get back into it, 4 days consecutive would have been more effective, but I think this allowed me to maintain some rhythm (keep the legs used to running) to not make the technical, hilly trails any harder than they already were going to be.

Tuesday: 8 Miles

VG.

Wednesday: 17 Miles- Milton, MA

Blue Hills run, 2/3 of long runs for Snowdonia prep. Did a similar run here in 2023 about 2-3 weeks later in the year. Good mix of surfaces from paved road to dirt road to the highly technical and steep skyline trail. Felt decent through about 12 then felt lower energy and fatigued to the finish. Hip was really tight and locked up towards the end, pretty uncomfortable.

Thursday: 8 Miles- Charlestown, RI

Ninigret. Now trying to resolve the tight hip which felt okay through 6 and not great after that.

Friday: 8 Miles- Hopkinton, RI

Grill loop/lollipop. Hip felt a lot better today after trying to loosen it up. Tried out new Salomon Speedcross 6's which felt pretty tight out of the box. Saw a snake on the white trail in the Westerly section, which is the first time I've seen a snake while running in RI. Snake was shaking really hard.

Saturday: 7 Miles- Groton, CT

Bluff loop with Dad. Did the usual pre race strides and noticed my hamstring is really tight at faster pace, likely the cause of hip tightness. Frustrating but that's from going right from Boston into hard trail runs without easing into it.

Sunday: 20 Miles- Beacon, NY

Breakneck Point Half. I didn't have particularly high expectations in the middle of hard training/fatigue and being a tough course, but I still felt disappointed in this race and like it was a humbling experience. Just really struggled out there. Biggest negative of the race though was re-rolling my right ankle, which I had a sprain in November of last year and it never quite returned to the original size. Bizarre ankle roll, as this was a plantar flexion sprain and not inversion. I've never had that before. I'm not even sure it necessarily means I'm at further risk for sprains because I didn't invert it. Regardless, there was a decent amount of swelling after so definitely need to keep an eye on it.

Weekly Total: 69 Miles

Weekly Highlight: Getting in my best week of trail training ahead of the 50K.

Weekly Lowlight: Felt like crap all week, a lot of issues, even if some were minor. Rolled ankle and got wrecked at Breakneck.
