Finally a nice break from racing (11 days off).
Monday: 4 Miles. Six park ave repeats an hour after eight slices of pizza (field trip). Didn't run them super fast and felt uncomfortable, but got through them easily, and most hill workouts aren't too bad (exceptions are field street or fingers). Difficulty of Workout: 1/5.
Tuesday: 7 Miles. I was looking forward to a run in the rain...and then we had to run treadmills. So 45 minutes staring at the wall or the clock, then an ab workout.
Wednesday: 4 Miles again, another workout. It was track this time, so I was looking forward to it because the track workouts feel good and challenge me while I find the hills to be boring. First up was an (nearly) all-out 1200. I was supposed to run 3:30, and after a first lap that felt great (but was too slow) I picked it up and pushed the next two laps to finish in 4:29, which is close to my 1500 pace. Then we had 6x200 w/35 seconds recovery. My splits were something like: 34/34/34/34/34/31. Next we had 3x300, then 3x200, and my splits were 49/49/48/34/34/33 and we did a 100 for fun (15). A pretty fun workout and I was surprised how easy most times weres to run. Difficulty of Workout: 3/5.
Thursday: 7 Miles on Christmas Eve with small WTAC group. Not a lot of energy on this one, and I was glad when it was over. We ran out on Atlantic Ave, and through wind and fatigue, I fell back a tiny bit towards the final portion. Somehow I regained energy and felt great on the beach portion. I thought we were done when we came back to the breachway parking lot, but we ended up running another mile on Weekapaug roads. A tiring run, but glad to get the mileage in with others instead of alone.
Friday: 0 Miles. I usually don't like taking days off, but it was Christmas and I just wasn't feeling it. I almost went running because I wanted to try out the new 890v5s that I bought a month ago, but I decided against it as the weather wasn't pleasant (not bad running weather, but I'm looking forward to a colder/snow day) and nothing would be special about the run.
Saturday: 4 Miles. I think most hill workouts we do are fairly easy since there's plenty of recovery and I only get tired at the end of each hill. Fingers are more tiring because there's less recovery, and field street are also harder because of the steepness. It seems we do many more track workouts than hills in track season, but vice versa for XC. It was track again, and it continued the trend of hard Saturday workouts. Last Saturday was a meet, but before that was a difficult 11x400. Today was 4x200, all-out 600, 2x400, and 8x200, but some was shortened because we were also extremely tired from the 600. The recovery was 30-35 seconds for all the 200s, about 70 seconds between 400s, and 3-5 minutes between different distances. My splits were 34/34/33/34/88/70/73/36/37/35/35/35/34/34/33 (not completely accurate, but pretty close). I was off on a few, and was very tired after the 600. Also, my 600 split is probably not accurate since my PR is 1:32. The coach was timing several groups, so I think my time was a few seconds off.
Sunday: 8 Miles at Bluff Point. Small WTAC group of three explored Bluff and Haley. Many sections of trails:
1) Bluff Wide Double Track- the most popular choice, the paved 3.5 mi loop was our starting point (we did 2/3 of it)
2) Bluff technical single track- off the main loop on the right, were many single-track trails with many features that made it tougher- rock gardens, root gardens, and being narrow. I slipped a few times on mud, and even went down once (it was soaked). I fell a little behind here as I am not a technical master, especially when it's slippery.
3) Bluff dirt single track- a narrow but only dirt (only technical at all) single track off the technical portion that was on the outside of the park and can bring you back to a main area.
4) Bluff Short Sand- a short loop with soft sand on the side that's less than a quarter of mile. Ran it hard because I remember I made a segment last time we ran it.
5) Rocky double track- it took us a while, but we finally found the way to haley farm. It was a rocky (think scattered rocks, not rock gardens) trail along the fence next to the train tracks that was longer than expected.
6) Short double track- immediately after getting there, there was a quarter mile of double track with many side trails
7) Rocky single track at haley- we got there, crossed the bridge, and there were many big rocks to runs over, as well as dirt single-track
8) Grassy double track- a wide trail over several fields, similar to other places
Hope this wasn't too confusing.
A fun run, and still much more to explore.
Weekly Total: 34
YTD Mileage: 1,807
There's 4 days left of running in the year, and my Monday and Wednesday mileage will likely be low (no more than 5, workout and meet), so I should have between 1,820 and 1,830 miles total for the year, depending on how much I run Tuesday and Thursday. Those could also be low, because they're before and after a meet that I'm running a tough race in.
Also, I have started my End of the Year Post. I'll try to have it done early January since I'm putting a lot in it.
