First meet of the season on Wednesday, and it's a pretty easy but extremely fun one. The season opens with the Injury Fund Relays, which was probably my favorite meet of last season (because relays are fun, and less stressful). Really looking forward to it.
Monday: 6 Miles. We had our first track workout Saturday, then we followed it up with another today. 2x1600, 2x800. My splits were supposed to be 5:20s for the 1600s and 2:27 for the 800s. Recovery was 4 minutes between 1600s, 6 minutes between 1600 and 800, and 2 minutes between the 800s. I ended up running 5:06, 5:14, 2:23, 2:23. Very happy with this workout, especially as last week was pretty mediocre. Difficulty of Workout: 4/5.
Tuesday: 7 Miles. Everyone in the group, including me was extremely weak and tired so we were happy to finish it up. Ran on mostly quiet Pawcatuck roads.
Wednesday: 3 Miles, Injury Fund Relays. A recap-
4x800: I wasn't feeling great waiting around as the anchor legs. I stretched and waited patiently, but my legs weren't feeling as great as I had hoped. Eventually, it was my turn. Our team was in 7th place (I think), I took the baton and ran. I pushed the pace from the start. I didn't pass anyone the first lap, then the second lap I passed people who I was lapping. Our team needed 6th for a ribbon, and I wanted to get that 6th place (we were 6th last year). Pushed the next lap, passed into 6th and I was finally on the last one. I felt really strong and that I would break 2:10, a time I would be happy with. I came up on a NK runner in the last 100m. I went around on the curve to pass him, but he unexpectedly surged ahead. I stayed with him but it was an awkward position on the curve, and I had to just stay with him until the final straightaway. I surged to the finish and beat him out for 5th place. Final split- 2:08.
SMR: Well, at least I got a good rest before the next relay, right? No, I walked away from the start line and my SMR teammates were all ready to run. I ran back to my bag, changed my uniform (sprinters have different uniforms) and ten minutes later I had to run another 800. The westerly runner before took a nasty fall, and it confused me a little, as he didn't know if he was still running. We lost five seconds before he started again, but it took me 30 seconds to realize that I was going to run another all-out 800 in less than a minute. I took the baton, and pushed the pace immediately but felt very weak. My first 400 was good, but I was really tired in the last 400. 2:13 for my 2nd 800 of the day.
DMR: Another 20 minutes went by, and I was running another race. This time the DMR. It's an interesting relay where the distances go: 1200, 400, 800, 1600. I was running the 1600, and I felt like I'd run an 8:00 mile pace. We were in 7th when I got the baton. After three laps, I was lapped by the top runner in the race, but I then passed into 6th. I slowly got weaker and weaker and didn't have a fast last 400. I was lapped with 300 meters to go by a fast Chariho runner. 4:56 for my 1600 split, my worst time of the day.
Overall, I think I did all right. I only had one time I liked, but I couldn't have run any faster with such little recovery. It was tiring, but fun to run several events.
Thursday: 7 Miles, no practice today so a few teammates and I headed down to the Y to start our run there. I finally decided on a route, that I would run to the boombridge road bridge and back. Boombridge is one of my favorite roads in Westerly, yet I had never run more than half a mile on it. I'm not a huge fan of the roads that got me there, but it was awesome to run on Boombridge again. I passed the hardwood section, the farthest out I've been and I enjoyed seeing the surrounding woods, a cool swamp on the left, a power line section before reaching the bridge. The bridge was the highlight of my run: no cars allowed with a great view of the Pawcatuck river on both sides, and there were cows. It was cool, and then we went back.
Friday: 7 Miles again. Was prepared for a workout so didn't plan a route in advance and had to make it up as we went along. Decided I hadn't run apache in a while, so picked that route. Got tired after a short stop in Cimalore, then returned back for a tough ab workout.
Saturday: 5 Miles. Another Saturday, another brutal track workout. Of course, it didn't help that it happened to be hot again (mid-50s and sunny in mid-December). 11x400. First set was 6x400, 71 seconds each, with 90 seconds recovery. Next (after a 5 minute break) was 4x400, 65 seconds each, with 150 seconds recovery, another 5 minute break, than all out. The first set felt good, and I was only tired at the end, the second set was extremely tiring, and the final one felt awful. My splits: 73/69/67/70/70/70/63/65/65/65/60. Difficulty: 5/5.
Sunday: Glad to hear I have the day off Sunday, because I was going to have to wake up really early. Meet Monday shouldn't be too awful, but should provide excellent competition as I will probably face Chariho's top runner.
Weekly Total: 35 Miles
YTD Mileage: 1,729 Miles
